System-Neutral RPG Companions
A simple system for dealing with companions, especially for solo RPGs!
Why Companions?
I find it useful in my solo games to have a main character and 1-2 companions.
If the main character dies, unless the entire party is wiped out, the story can continue from the perspective of one of the remaining companions.
System-Neutral
This supplement can be used for any RPG system, though I primarily use it for systems with fewer stats, such as Cairn, Into the Odd, etc.
Usage Die
Companions are statted like PCs, but also have a Usage Die, normally starting at D8.
Whenever companions are asked to do something risky or that requires effort, roll their Usage Die — on a 1-2, the Usage Die goes down one die step, and on a 1, the companion also refuses to do the task.
Once the Usage Die is depleted, companions will be too afraid/exhausted to do anything. If appropriate, they might even flee.
The Usage Die can be increased one die step (maxing out at the initial Usage Die value) by “paying” the companion - different companions require different amounts or types of payment to replenish their Usage Die.
Background
Companions also come with a general background, with which they will get advantage to all relevant checks except Ud.
Inventory
Companion inventory does not need tracking, unless they are helping to carry items.
If it makes sense for the companion to have a certain tool (dependent on their background), roll a D6 — on 1-4, they have the required tool.
